WHO WE ARE

Serving Northeast Saskatchewan for over 30 years…

OUR HISTORY

Backstage Music opened in the newly constructed Melfort Mall in 1981 and has served customers throughout Northeast Saskatchewan ever since. Owned and operated by Randy Sorensen, Backstage had its modest start while Sorensen was working as an electrician in the Melfort area. He decided to enter the retail game and bought a six month old business called Bamboo and Sound, specializing in vinyl records and wicker furniture. The night before he was to sign the bank loan, he read an article in Rolling Stone magazine entitled “Backstage Music” – and the store as we know it was born. The initial inventory included records, eight tracks and a single high-end stereo that was played all day long. The store expanded each and every year, branching into car audio, home electronics, computers, gaming, and cellular mobility.

Over thirty years later, Backstage is on the cutting edge of the consumer electronics world and works closely with over thirty vendors and suppliers to offer our expansive product inventory and the latest, most popular brands – all available in our expanded 4,000 square-foot location in the Melfort Mall.

Backstage Music has earned several Mel-Bex Awards over the years including Business of the Year in 1998 and 2000. Backstage was also a finalist for the 1999 Saskatchewan Chamber of Commerce ABEX awards in the marketing category. They won their first provincial SaskTel Customer Service Excellence Award in 2000 and have been awarded this honour multiple times since.

As recognition for its community presence and valued history, Backstage Music Ltd. was honoured with the distinguished Heritage Award at the annual Mel-Bex Awards on Saturday, April 16, 2011.
